Bhupender Gupta Assumes Charge as Chairman & Managing Director of NHPC Limited

Faridabad, September 4, 2025 – Shri Bhupender Gupta has officially taken over as the Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company and a ‘Navratna’ enterprise under the Government of India. The charge was assumed at NHPC’s Corporate Office in Faridabad on September 4, 2025. Alongside his new role, Shri Gupta also holds the additional charge of CMD, SJVN Limited.

An accomplished leader in the power sector, Shri Gupta brings over 34 years of professional experience, including more than three decades in Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs). He holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in Operations Management.

Shri Gupta began his career with ACC Ltd in 1991 before entering the CPSU ecosystem in 1995 with SJVN Limited, where he contributed to the planning, erection, commissioning, and operations of the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Plant, India’s largest operational hydroelectric project. His expertise also extended to Bhutan, where he served on deputation with the 1020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Project between 2002 and 2005.

In 2007, he joined REC Ltd., playing a pivotal role in hydro and thermal project financing and later leading as Additional CEO of REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd.. His tenure witnessed the execution of critical national schemes, including Saubhagya, DDUGJY, and PMDP, strengthening India’s power distribution framework.

Shri Gupta’s leadership journey also includes his role as Director (Technical) at the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan in 2020, where he resolved long-pending construction and contractual challenges. Most recently, he served as Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited (THDCIL), where he spearheaded major technical initiatives since June 2023.

With a career spanning hydropower, thermal, renewable energy, transmission, and distribution, Shri Gupta is recognized for his strategic vision and operational excellence. As CMD of NHPC, his focus will be on leveraging non-fossil fuel-based energy resources, ensuring self-reliance in energy security, and advancing India’s sustainable energy targets. His forward-looking strategy includes integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), enabling EV-grid integration, enhancing cybersecurity, and adopting emerging technologies such as green hydrogen, bioenergy, and energy storage solutions.

Shri Bhupender Gupta’s appointment is expected to further strengthen NHPC’s leadership role in India’s clean energy transition and support the nation’s vision of a sustainable and secure energy future.
