Justice Surya Kant formally took charge as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on 24 November 2025, after being administered the oath of office by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. His tenure will continue until 9 February 2027.
The oath ceremony, held in the Durbar Hall, was attended by key national leaders, including Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and senior members of the judiciary and government. The brief but dignified event marked an important transition in the country’s top court.
Justice Surya Kant brings decades of judicial experience, having served in various capacities across the judiciary and contributed to several significant rulings. His elevation to the top judicial post is seen as an opportunity to further strengthen judicial processes and uphold constitutional principles.
Following the ceremony, the newly sworn-in Chief Justice interacted with dignitaries and formally commenced his duties at the Supreme Court, beginning a tenure expected to focus on transparency, timely justice, and strengthening institutional efficiency.
