Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects), NHPC Limited, has taken over the additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company and a Navratna Enterprise of the Government of India.
A graduate in Civil Engineering with over 33 years of experience in the power and infrastructure sector, Shri Singh has played a pivotal role in the execution of mega and prestigious hydropower projects in India and Bhutan. Since his appointment as Director (Projects) on 24th July 2024, NHPC has witnessed remarkable progress, including the commissioning of the 800 MW Parbati-II Hydroelectric Project, a technically challenging initiative with a Head Race Tunnel of approximately 31.5 km. Under his leadership, the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower HEP, one of India’s largest under-construction hydropower projects, is now at the verge of commissioning, with significant advancements also recorded in other ongoing projects and those undertaken by NHPC’s joint ventures and subsidiaries.
Previously, Shri Singh held additional charge as Director (Technical), NHPC, from August 2024 to April 2025. He currently chairs the Boards of NHPC Renewable Energy Limited and Jalpower Corporation Limited, both wholly owned subsidiaries of NHPC. Additionally, he serves as Nominee Director on the Boards of Ratle Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited and Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited, joint ventures of NHPC with JKSPDCL.
Before joining NHPC, Shri Singh had a distinguished career at SJVN Limited, where he served as Chief General Manager and Head of multiple hydropower projects at different stages of execution, including Sunni Dam HEP, Naitwar Mori HEP, and Luhri HEP Stage II. He also worked as CEO of STPL, a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. His contributions include overseeing critical construction works of the Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Project (1,500 MW), the largest hydro project in India, and Bhutan’s Tala Hydroelectric Project (1,020 MW).
Throughout his career, Shri Singh has built deep expertise in project construction, survey and investigation, detailed project reporting, bid evaluation, contract management, project monitoring, and coordination with key ministries and agencies for critical statutory and environmental clearances.
With his extensive technical, managerial, and leadership experience, Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh is expected to further strengthen NHPC’s position as India’s leading hydropower utility, while driving its ambitious renewable energy and infrastructure development initiatives.
