Buddhist Monks from Nine Countries Tour Uttar Pradesh’s Buddha Circuit

Lucknow, January 21, 2025

A delegation of Buddhist monks from nine countries is currently touring Uttar Pradesh as part of a Buddha Circuit pilgrimage organized by the state’s tourism department in collaboration with the Light of Buddha Dharma Foundation International. The pilgrimage began on January 18 and will continue till January 30. The delegation’s visit aims to promote the rich Buddhist heritage of Uttar Pradesh.

The delegation, comprising distinguished Theravada monks from Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and others, along with devotees from Brazil, Portugal, the USA, and the UK, arrived at Lucknow on January 19. On January 20, a grand symposium and welcome ceremony were held at Shanti Upvan Buddhist Vihar in Alam Bagh. The event featured continuous recitation of the Dhammapada, cultural performances, film screenings, and a “Sangha Dana” ceremony for world peace. The delegation departed for Shravasti on Tuesday and will visit other significant Buddhist sites, including Kushinagar, Sarnath, and Kaushambi, during their journey.

Uttar Pradesh is home to several prominent Buddhist landmarks, including Sarnath, where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon; Shravasti, where he spent the majority of his monastic rainy retreats; Sankisa, where he descended from Trayatrimsa signifying the 33 Heaven defined in Buddhism; and Kushinagar, where he attained Mahaparinirvana. These sites embody a living Buddhist heritage, drawing devotees and tourists from around the globe.

Addressing the gathering in Lucknow, Dr. Wangmo Dicshi, Executive Director of the Foundation from the USA, praised the Uttar Pradesh government’s efforts to develop and preserve the Buddha Circuit. She emphasized that the state’s Buddhist sites, rich in spiritual and historical significance, remain vibrant symbols of the Buddha’s teachings. She highlighted the multilingual chanting including Pali, Tibetan, and Sanskrit languages that will be performed at these sacred locations, activating the spiritual vibrance of these Buddhist destinations.

The delegation includes notable personalities like Bollywood cinematographer Eric and Brazilian delegate Nelson Filfo Chama. The group’s itinerary includes visits to Sankisa Shravasti (January 22-23), Kushinagar (January 24-26), Sarnath (January 27-28), and Kaushambi (January 29-30).

UP’s Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh underscored Uttar Pradesh’s significance as a global hub for Buddhist pilgrims, with its sites offering deep spiritual experiences. He assured continued efforts to enhance Buddhist tourism through initiatives like the Dhamma Yatra, enabling visitors to explore and connect with the Buddha’s legacy.
