In a decisive move to accelerate the development of the Western Regional Campus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) in Amravati, Information and Broadcasting Secretary, Shri Sanjay Jaju, urged contractors nationwide, particularly from the Vidarbha region, to actively participate in the bidding process. Shri Jaju reviewed the construction status with officials from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and convened a meeting with heads of Akashvani, Doordarshan, Press Information Bureau, and the Central Bureau of Communication in Nagpur.
During the review, Shri Jaju directed CPWD officials to expedite the tendering process, emphasizing the importance of timely completion of this institute, which will provide world-class education in mass communication to students in the region.
Established in 2012 and located in the western Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, IIMC Amravati is an apex institution for media and communication education. The campus, designated as a deemed university under the Ministry of Education and an autonomous body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, is being developed with a budgetary allocation of ₹90 crore. The new infrastructure spans 15 acres in Badnera town, Amravati district.
Shri Jaju revealed that tenders for the construction are now live on the CPWD website (etender.cpwd.gov.in), with submissions due by January 27. He expressed optimism that key educational facilities at IIMC Amravati will be operational by the academic year 2026-27.
The campus will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including administrative and academic buildings, hostels for students, staff quarters, and a 200-seat auditorium.
IIMC operates five regional centers offering journalism courses in English, Hindi, and regional languages. These centers are located in Amravati (Maharashtra), Dhenkanal (Odisha), Aizawl (Mizoram), Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), and Kottayam (Kerala), collectively providing postgraduate courses in journalism.
Key attendees at the review meeting included Deputy Director General of Akashvani Nagpur Shri Ramesh Gharde, Chief Engineer of CPWD Shri Pradeep Dixit, Regional Director of IIMC Amravati Dr. Rajesh Kushwaha, and other senior officials.
