RBI Appoints Suman Ray as Executive Director

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Suman Ray as Executive Director (ED) with effect from September 1, 2026, bringing a seasoned central banker to a key leadership position at the central bank.

Prior to his elevation, Ray was serving as Regional Director for Maharashtra. He has more than three decades of experience with the RBI, having worked across several important areas, including currency management, financial inclusion, payment and settlement systems, consumer education and protection, and human resources.

During his career, Ray has also served as Secretary to the Western Area Local Board, gaining experience in regional and institutional coordination within the central bank.

As Executive Director, Ray will oversee the Department of Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) and the Premises Department. The DICGC plays an important role in protecting bank depositors through the deposit insurance framework.

Ray’s appointment adds extensive institutional and operational experience to the RBI’s senior leadership. His background across multiple banking and regulatory functions is expected to support his responsibilities in deposit insurance, financial stability-related administration and the management of the central bank’s premises functions.

The elevation marks another significant step in Ray’s long career with the RBI and places him in charge of two important departments at a time when the central bank continues to strengthen its institutional and regulatory framework.
