Burra Vamsi Rama Mohan, currently Director (Projects) at Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL), has been selected by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) as the next Chairman and Managing Director of India’s largest electric power transmission utility. Awaiting Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approval, he will steer PGCIL’s green energy evacuation and smart grid modernization, critical to India’s 500 GW renewable target by 2030.
With over 30 years in the power and telecom sectors, Rama Mohan will leverage his experience establishing Power Grid’s Regulatory Cell and pioneering competitive bidding success. Previously COO (Telecom) and CEO of POWERGRID Teleservices Limited, he expanded telecom operations and launched the company’s first data centre.
As CMD, Rama Mohan will oversee the execution of interstate transmission system (ISTS) projects, green energy corridors, and advanced conductor technologies enabling 66%+ capacity enhancement on existing lines. His procurement management expertise and regulatory navigation skills position PGCIL to secure complex ultra-high voltage projects under competitive tariffs.
The leadership transition comes as PGCIL manages India’s national transmission grid with 51.34% Government stake. Rama Mohan will accelerate HVDC lines for solar-wind hybrid parks, battery energy storage integration, and real-time grid stability solutions amid rising renewable penetration.
