Raj Kumar Chaudhary joins JERC as Chairperson

Raj Kumar Chaudhary joins JERC as Chairperson, marking a key leadership move in India’s power sector regulatory framework.

Raj Kumar Chaudhary, former Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC Limited, has taken on the role at the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission for UT of J&K and UT of Ladakh.

Leading regulatory oversight in power sector

In his new role, he will be responsible for shaping electricity regulations under the Electricity Act 2003, including tariff determination and regulatory oversight across generation, transmission, and distribution sectors in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

His mandate also includes evaluation of tariff petitions, issuance of tariff orders, and handling review petitions where required.

Extensive leadership in hydro and energy

Chaudhary brings decades of experience in the power sector, having previously served as CMD of NHPC Limited and held senior roles across major hydroelectric projects, including the Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan.

His background spans engineering, financial planning, and large-scale infrastructure execution.

Strategic role in energy governance

The Raj Kumar Chaudhary joins JERC development comes at a time when India’s power sector is evolving rapidly with increased focus on regulatory reforms and energy transition.

His leadership is expected to strengthen governance, improve tariff frameworks, and support efficient power sector operations in the region.
