Former IAS officer and ex-Secretary in the Ministry of Law and Justice, Raj Kumar Goyal, has formally assumed office as the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of India. His tenure commenced on December 15, 2025, following his appointment under the provisions of the Right to Information Act, 2005.
The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at a formal ceremony held in New Delhi, marking a new phase of leadership at the Central Information Commission, the apex body responsible for safeguarding transparency and citizens’ right to information.
Raj Kumar Goyal brings decades of experience in public administration and legal governance to the role. During his service as Justice Secretary, he was closely associated with judicial reforms, legislative processes, and institutional strengthening initiatives within the justice system.
His appointment fills a key leadership vacancy at the Commission and is expected to reinforce the functioning of India’s transparency framework, particularly in ensuring accountability, timely information disclosure, and effective implementation of the RTI Act.
The Central Information Commission plays a pivotal role in upholding democratic governance by adjudicating RTI appeals and complaints across public authorities nationwide.
