In a historic political shift, Rekha Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been confirmed as the next Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the party’s return to power in the national capital after 27 years. The official swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for February 20, 2025, at Ramlila Maidan.
Rekha Gupta’s political journey began in 1993 with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during her college days at Delhi University. Her leadership skills quickly propelled her to the position of President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1996-1997. Over the years, she has held various significant roles within the BJP, including General Secretary of the Delhi BJP and National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha. Her consistent dedication to public service is evident from her consecutive victories as a councillor from Shalimar Bagh and her recent triumph in the 2025 assembly elections, where she defeated AAP’s Bandana Kumari by a margin of 29,595 votes.
Upon her confirmation as Chief Minister, Gupta expressed her commitment to transforming Delhi into a “clean and green” city. She emphasized the importance of expediting developmental works and ensuring a corruption-free administration. Her vision includes improving infrastructure, enhancing public services, and promoting environmental sustainability.
While the official announcement did not specify the name of the Deputy Chief Minister, sources within the party suggest that discussions are underway to appoint two Deputy Chief Ministers. This move aims to represent diverse communities within Delhi, with potential candidates being considered from both the Purvanchali community and among women leaders. Names such as Kapil Mishra and Rekha Gupta have been mentioned as strong contenders for these positions.
The BJP’s strategic decision to possibly appoint two Deputy Chief Ministers reflects its intent to create an inclusive government that represents Delhi’s diverse demographic. As the city prepares for this new leadership, expectations are high for policies that will address key issues such as infrastructure development, women’s safety, and environmental sustainability.
The swearing-in ceremony on February 20 is anticipated to be a grand event, with invitations extended to prominent political figures and dignitaries. As Rekha Gupta assumes office, Delhiites look forward to a new chapter in the city’s governance, hopeful for progress and positive change under her leadership.
