Shailesh Vagerwal Recommended as CMD of Bharat Dynamics Limited by PESB

The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has recommended Shri Shailesh Vagerwal, currently Chief General Manager at Munitions India Limited (MIL), for the pivotal role of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a key Schedule B defence public sector undertaking. This decision, announced on February 21, 2026, followed interviews with nine senior defence executives, marking a significant leadership transition for BDL, India’s premier missile manufacturer, headquartered in Hyderabad.
Vagerwal’s selection underscores his proven track record in defence production, poised to
drive BDL’s strategic advancements amid India’s push for self-reliance.
Shri Vagerwal brings decades of expertise from MIL, where he spearheaded ammunition
manufacturing, supply chain optimisation, and operational excellence. His initiatives have
enhanced production efficiency and quality, directly supporting India’s defence modernisation efforts. At BDL, renowned for designing, developing, and producing missile systems, torpedoes, and underwater weapons for the armed forces, Vagerwal is expected to accelerate indigenisation, boost output capabilities, and reinforce national security.
The PESB interview panel evaluated a strong field of candidates, including Commodore
Neeraj Uday (GM HSS & SED, Electronics Corporation of India Limited), Shri Santosh
Kumar (GM, Vande Bharat Production & Maintenance, BHEL), Shri Abhitabh Nath Rawal
(Additional GM, BHEL), Shri Sanjeev Kumar Agrawal (Chief GM, Defence Production), Shri
Babji Patchilla (GM, Defence), Shri Surendra Kumar (GM, AVNL Co, Chennai), Shri Amit
Singh (Chief GM, OEF Hazratpur, Troop Comforts Limited), and Shri Utapaal Srivastav (GM,
Defence). Vagerwal emerged as the top choice for his strategic vision and hands-on
leadership in high-stakes defence projects.
This appointment aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, emphasising indigenous
defence manufacturing and export potential. BDL’s role in supplying advanced systems to
the Indian military positions it centrally in national preparedness. Vagerwal’s elevation is
anticipated to foster innovation, streamline operations, and expand global partnerships,
ensuring BDL remains a cornerstone of India’s defence ecosystem.
As India bolsters its strategic autonomy, Vagerwal’s stewardship promises a heightened focus on cutting-edge technologies and resilient supply chains. This PESB recommendation
signals robust governance in PSUs, injecting fresh momentum into defence self-sufficiency
and operational prowess.
