RINL Appoints New Director (Operations)
Subhasis Sengupta has assumed charge as Director (Operations) of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, with effect from Wednesday.
The appointment of Subhasis Sengupta RINL comes at a crucial time for the organization as it focuses on enhancing operational efficiency, strengthening production capabilities, and advancing sustainable steel manufacturing initiatives.
Extensive Experience in the Steel Sector
Prior to joining RINL, Sengupta served as Chief General Manager (Projects) at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) at its Durgapur Steel Plant.
A Mechanical Engineering graduate from Bengal Engineering and Science University, he also holds an M.Tech in Design and Production Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Durgapur.
He began his professional career after a brief stint with Reliance Industries before joining SAIL as a Management Trainee (Technical) in 1992.
More Than Three Decades of Steel Industry Leadership
With over 30 years of experience in the steel industry, Sengupta has built expertise across steel production, maintenance, project execution, plant operations, and industrial management.
During his tenure as Chief General Manager (Projects) at Durgapur Steel Plant, he led major brownfield expansion projects valued at more than ₹5,500 crore. He was also associated with the proposed 3 MTPA greenfield expansion project estimated at approximately ₹28,000 crore.
His leadership has contributed to large-scale modernization and capacity enhancement initiatives aimed at improving operational performance and long-term competitiveness.
Track Record of Operational Improvement
Earlier, as Chief General Manager (Works) and Unit Head of SAIL Growth Works, Sengupta played a significant role in the turnaround of the facility.
Under his leadership, the unit recorded a 51 percent increase in production and a 108 percent rise in turnover. He also implemented several initiatives focused on improving equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and plant performance.
These achievements have established him as a seasoned operational leader within India’s steel sector.

The appointment of Subhasis Sengupta RINL is expected to support the company’s strategic objectives around operational excellence, digital transformation, and sustainability.
As Director (Operations), his immediate priorities include achieving full capacity utilization, strengthening safety standards, ensuring raw material security, enhancing equipment reliability, optimizing operational costs, and advancing decarbonization initiatives.
