A major stride toward sustainable infrastructure aligned with India’s Net Zero 2070 vision
In a landmark move supporting India’s journey toward achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070, the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop solar power plants along the elevated stretch of Package-1 (Delhi portion) of the Delhi–Saharanpur–Dehradun Highway (NH-709B) under Phase-1.
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Shri Harsh Malhotra, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road Transport and Highways, with Shri V. Umashankar, Secretary, MoRTH, and Shri Sanjay Sharma, Director, SECI, also attending the event.
This collaboration aims to harness the potential of solar energy for powering highway infrastructure, thereby reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable mobility. The project will act as a pilot model, showcasing the integration of renewable energy into large-scale infrastructure development.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Harsh Malhotra emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s steadfast commitment to renewable energy and green development. He noted that by leveraging solar energy across transport infrastructure, India is setting a precedent for innovative, environmentally responsible growth.
He further added that the SECI–NHAI partnership demonstrates how renewable energy can be seamlessly incorporated into public infrastructure projects, promoting cleaner highways and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
The collaboration reinforces both organizations’ dedication to building a sustainable future and aligns with the Government of India’s vision of promoting renewable energy and reducing carbon footprints nationwide.
