The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) has launched Janaushadhi Saptah 2026, a nationwide outreach campaign to raise awareness about affordable and quality generic medicines, according to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release. The week‑long event began on 1 March 2026 with health‑check‑up camps at over 250 locations across the country and will culminate on 8 March, observed as Janaushadhi Diwas.
The Saptah, themed “जन औषधि सस्ती भी, भरोसेमंद भी, सेहत की बात, बचत के साथ” (affordable and trustworthy, good health with savings), is organised by the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau (PMBI) under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers. During the seven days, the Bureau is coordinating free health‑check‑up and consultation initiatives that combine on‑site diagnostics with information drives on generic medicines available at Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras (PMBJAKs).
On the first day, camps were held at around 50 centres, including Delhi (Subhash Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), Chandrapura (Jharkhand), Ludhiana (Punjab), Hubballi‑Dharwad and Dakshina Kannada (Karnataka), Pune (Maharashtra), Chennai and Chidambaram (Tamil Nadu), Puducherry, Jaipur, Dehradun, and Bulandshahr, among others. The PIB text notes that roughly 100 people visited each camp on average. receiving free consultations and medicines, with a special focus on women and senior citizens.
Besides general‑health screening, many camps offered free blood tests, blood‑pressure measurement, and thyroid‑function screening, while doctor consultations covered general medicine, common infections, and chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. In selected locations, specialist services in areas such as nephrology, diabetology, paediatrics, physiotherapy, and eye care were also organised, often with on‑site distribution of
Janaushadhi medicines.
The Saptah has drawn active engagement from several political and medical dignitaries, including Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assemblies, who have visited camps in constituencies such as Malkajgiri (Telangana), Chidambaram (Tamil Nadu), and areas in Bihar, reiterating the importance of quality generic medicines in reducing out‑of‑pocket expenditure and strengthening community‑level healthcare. The ongoing PMBJP‑driven effort, now running over 18,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) nationwide and aiming for 25,000 kendras by 31 March 2027, is positioned in the PIB release as a key pillar of India’s strategy to ensure last‑mile access to affordable, quality medicines.
Public awareness activities will continue through 7 March, with additional outreach programmes targeted at both healthcare professionals and the general public. Citizens are encouraged to use the “Jan Aushadhi Sugam” mobile application to locate their nearest Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendra and access cost‑effective generic medicine options in their local areas.
