Coal India Independent Director Shri Ghanshyam Singh Rathore completes tenure

Coal India’s ten-year tenure of Shri Ghanshyam Singh Rathore, an Independent Director on the company’s Board, has come to an end, according to PSU Connect. Rathore, who served as an independent director of Coal India Limited (CIL), concluded his stint on the Board in line with the 10‑year maximum tenure prescribed for independent directors under the Companies Act framework, marking the completion of a full rotation cycle without any extension.
Rathore has been a member of several key Board committees at CIL, including the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee, Nomination and Remuneration Committee (NRC), Audit Committee, and others, contributing to governance, risk‑monitoring, and strategic‑policy discussions at India’s largest coal‑public‑sector enterprise. His tenure spanned a period of significant regulatory and operational shifts in the coal sector, including the expansion of commercial coal auctions, increased focus on CSR initiatives, and the company’s gradual push toward diversification and sustainability‑linked projects.
As an independent director, Rathore played a watchdog role, ensuring that CIL’s decision‑making remained aligned with statutory norms, shareholder interests, and long‑term corporate‑governance best practices. With his exit, the Board will need to induct a fresh independent director to maintain the prescribed composition and balance, typically in consultation with the Ministry of Coal and the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB).
