Atul Gupta appointed Chairman and Managing Director of Engineers India Limited

Atul Gupta has taken over as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Engineers India Limited (EIL), a Navratna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, following the superannuation of Vartika Shukla on 28 February 2026. According to the Indian PSU portal, Gupta succeeds Shukla at the helm of one of India’s most prominent engineering‑consultancy PSUs, which plays a central role in delivering large‑scale projects across refineries, petrochemicals, pipelines, infrastructure, and emerging energy‑transition segments, both in India and overseas markets.
Gupta has been serving as Director (Commercial) at EIL and brings over three decades of experience within the organisation, spanning project execution, commercial operations, contract management, and strategic business development. A mechanical engineer from GBPUAT, Pantnagar, he joined EIL as a management trainee in 1992 and has since led multidisciplinary teams across disciplines such as process engineering, contracting, procurement, manufacturing, construction, and commissioning in both greenfield and brownfield projects in refining, petrochemicals, pipelines and fertilisers. His career has included postings at multiple project locations in India and abroad before moving to the corporate office in 2007, which has equipped him with a deep understanding of EIL’s core consulting and EPC‑style delivery models.
The appointment followed a highly competitive selection process led by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), which reportedly evaluated a shortlist of candidates from EIL itself as well as from major PSUs such as GAIL (India) Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, and Bridge and Roof Company (India) Limited. Industry observers note that Gupta assumes charge at a pivotal phase when EIL is expanding its focus into areas such as clean‑energy projects, green‑hydrogen corridors, refinery‑modernisation and upgradation, petrochemical‑capacity expansion, and the digitalisation of engineering‑consultancy workflows. His leadership is expected to reinforce EIL’s position as a global engineering‑consultancy partner and to strengthen its role in India’s evolving energy‑transition and infrastructure‑development landscape.
