UPSIDA Signs MoU with IIT-BHU to Transform India’s Pharmaceutical Landscape

In a landmark move to accelerate India’s pharmaceutical prowess, the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology – Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU). The collaboration is set to reshape the pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem through the development of world-class pharma parks across 1,472 acres in Lalitpur, located in the heart of the Bundelkhand region.

The MoU marks a strategic alignment between industrial infrastructure and academic innovation. IIT-BHU, a premier institute known for its cutting-edge research in chemical engineering and pharmaceutical sciences, will act as the knowledge partner, offering technical expertise, R&D support, and sustainable development strategies for the upcoming industrial hub.

These state-of-the-art pharma parks will be spread across five villages—Saidpur, Gadolikala, Largan, Karounda, and Rampur. Designed to host a mix of bulk drug units, formulation plants, and API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) manufacturing facilities, the parks aim to significantly reduce India’s dependency on pharmaceutical imports while boosting local production capacity.

Speaking on the occasion, a senior UPSIDA official said, “This MoU is a major step toward transforming Uttar Pradesh into a global pharmaceutical manufacturing destination. With IIT-BHU’s support, we aim to integrate innovation, sustainability, and industrial efficiency into the very fabric of this initiative.”

The project is expected to attract massive investments, generate thousands of employment opportunities, and provide a major boost to the regional economy. More importantly, it reflects a growing synergy between academia and industry in driving India’s self-reliance in healthcare and pharmaceutical production.

Construction and groundwork are expected to begin soon, with Phase 1 of development covering approximately 300 acres. Once operational, the Lalitpur Pharma Park could become a benchmark for future industrial zones across the country.

This initiative not only highlights Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to industrial growth but also underscores India’s evolving role as a leader in the global pharma sector.
