Demis Hassabis Envisions AI Revolution in Science and Medicine Amid Global Calls for Unity

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis captivated attendees at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, hailing AI as “the most transformative technology in human history” and predicting it will fundamentally reshape science, medicine, and climate solutions at a pivotal global juncture.
Delivering a keynote, Hassabis forecasted that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) would emerge within 5-8 years via advanced hybrid models that integrate vast foundational knowledge with sophisticated planning and reasoning capabilities. He spotlighted DeepMind’s AlphaFold as a game-changer, dramatically compressing drug discovery timelines from years to mere months by decoding protein structures, paving the way for novel treatments against intractable diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Beyond breakthroughs, Hassabis warned of profound societal implications, urging immediate global collaboration to harness AI’s promise while curbing risks such as weaponisation, bias amplification, and economic disruption. “We stand at a threshold moment; international cooperation through forums like this summit, from the UK, Paris, Seoul, to India, is essential to ensure benefits are universal and dangers contained,” he emphasised.
Hosted under the theme of People, Planet, and Progress, the Summit draws over 110
countries, 30 international bodies, and top leaders to craft human-centric AI policies for
sustainable growth. Hassabis lauded India’s role in the Global South, aligning with its vision
for inclusive innovation amid rapid advances in autonomous agents and multi-modal
systems. He called for proactive governance frameworks prioritizing safety, equity, and accessibility, echoing Nobel-winning insights on AI’s “electricity-like” impact on productivity and discovery.
As enterprises and governments race ahead, Hassabis stressed ethical guardrails to
democratize AI’s power, preventing a divide between AI haves and have-nots. The address reinforces the Summit’s momentum, building on prior global dialogues to translate AI hype into responsible, collaborative action for humanity’s shared future.
