Shri B P Singh, a senior officer of the Indian Naval Armament Service, has assumed charge as Director General of Naval Armament at Naval Headquarters, New Delhi, effective from 1 March 2026. The appointment, highlighted by PSU Watch’s Defence Watch vertical and the Press Information Bureau, marks a key transition in the leadership of the Indian Navy’s armament‑management structure, with Singh succeeding Shri Divakar Jayant, who retired on 28 February 2026 after a distinguished career.
An officer of the 1994 batch of the Indian Naval Armament Service, Singh is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Bihar College of Engineering, now the National Institute of Technology, Patna, and brings over three decades of experience in the Naval Armament Organisation. Before his elevation to DGONA, he served as Chief General Manager, Naval Armament Depot, Mumbai, where he headed critical operational, logistics, and infrastructure‑upgradation initiatives for the Navy’s armament‑and‑ammunition ecosystem.
Throughout his career, Singh has held key postings at Naval Armament Depots Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, Trombay, and Aluva, as well as a stint at the Directorate General of Naval Armament at Naval Headquarters, contributing to policy‑formulation and strategic‑planning in the armament‑domain. His portfolio spans conventional armament, ammunition, and guided‑weapon systems, with expertise in procurement, storage, maintenance, safety, logistics‑management, and life‑cycle support of complex weapon systems, all of which are critical for maintaining the Indian Navy’s operational‑readiness.
In addition, Singh is an alumnus of the National Defence College, where he underwent advanced training in strategic and national‑security studies, further strengthening his credentials in high‑level defence‑planning and resource‑stewardship. As Director General of Naval Armament, he is expected to oversee the acquisition, quality‑assurance, and lifecycle‑management of naval weapon systems, drive standardisation and safety‑reforms, and deepen integration between the indigenous defence industrial base and the Navy’s evolving operational‑requirements.
The appointment signals the Indian Navy’s focus on strengthening its behind‑the‑scenes armament‑and‑logistics backbone at a time when India is expanding its ship‑building and weapon‑modernisation programmes. Defence‑watch analysts note that Singh’s deep‑domain knowledge and proven track record in depot‑management and armament‑policy‑making position him to play a pivotal role in sustaining fleet‑readiness and supporting the Navy’s transition toward a more technology‑driven and self‑reliant defence posture.
