BEML LTD. Limited has entered into three Licensing Agreements with the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), a premier DRDO laboratory, for the Transfer of Technology (ToT) to manufacture critical mobility and support systems for the Indian Army’s Armoured Corps. Under these agreements, BEML will indigenously develop and produce the Unit Maintenance Vehicle (UMV) for MBT Arjun, the Unit Repair Vehicle (URV) for MBT Arjun, and the Full Trailer for 70T Tank Transporter equipped with an Advanced Hydraulic Suspension System.
The agreements were formally handed over by Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, to Shri Sanjay Som, Director (Mining & Construction), BEML Ltd., during a ceremony at VRDE in Ahmednagar on June 07 2025. The event was attended by Shri G. Ramamohana Rao, Director, VRDE; Dr Prateek Kishor Director General (Armament and Combat Engineering) Cluster, DRDO, along with senior DRDO scientists and industry representatives.
Leveraging its deep expertise in designing and manufacturing advanced defence platforms and ground support equipment, BEML will develop and deliver the following systems:
Unit Maintenance Vehicle (UMV) for MBT Arjun: A robust field support vehicle designed to perform first-line technical maintenance and light repairs on electrical and mechanical assemblies of the Arjun Main Battle Tank during operations, thereby ensuring continuous operational readiness.
Unit Repair Vehicle (URV) for MBT Arjun: A versatile support system capable of conducting second-line maintenance and field repairs of critical assemblies, enhancing the uptime, mobility, and combat effectiveness of the Arjun MBT fleet.
Full Trailer for 70T Tank Transporter: An advanced trailer system engineered for transporting heavy combat vehicles such as the Arjun MBT Mk-1A. Paired with BEML’s High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) 8×8 Prime Mover, the trailer is designed to operate across diverse terrains—metalled, gravelled, or unpaved—and incorporates modular hydraulic suspension for superior mobility. Its steerable axles with counter-steering significantly reduce the turning circle diameter, offering exceptional manoeuvrability even in demanding operational scenarios.
