In a major step towards bridging language barriers and enhancing digital inclusivity, the Digital India BHASHINI Division and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop cutting-edge multilingual AI solutions for the Indian Railways.
The collaboration aims to empower passengers from diverse linguistic backgrounds by integrating AI-driven language technologies across key digital platforms of Indian Railways. With this strategic move, the railway ecosystem is set to become more accessible, user-friendly, and inclusive for millions of daily commuters.
Under this partnership, BHASHINI’s advanced natural language processing tools—such as real-time translation, speech recognition, and text-to-speech—will be embedded into Indian Railways’ public-facing systems, including train enquiry services, mobile applications, and grievance redressal portals. The integration will support a wide range of Indian languages, ensuring passengers can engage in their preferred language without facing communication barriers.
Speaking on the development, a senior official from the Digital India programme said, “This MoU is more than a technical collaboration—it’s a step towards democratizing access to essential services. Language should never be a limitation in a country as diverse as India.”
CRIS officials highlighted that this partnership would also help improve operational efficiency, as AI-driven interfaces reduce response time and enhance the passenger experience across multiple touchpoints.
The move aligns with the broader vision of the Digital India initiative, which prioritizes inclusive growth and digital empowerment for all citizens. With this MoU, Indian Railways is expected to set a new benchmark in multilingual digital service delivery, reaffirming its commitment to innovation and accessibility.
Deployment of the new multilingual features is expected to roll out in phases over the coming months.
