Senior IPS officer Harmeet Singh officially assumed charge today as the Director General of Police (DGP) and Head of the Police Force (HoPF) in Assam, marking a new chapter in the stateโs law enforcement leadership.
A 1992-batch officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Singh took over the reins at Police Headquarters in Guwahati, where he was accorded a ceremonial welcome by senior officers and staff. His appointment comes after months of serving in an acting capacity, following the transfer of his predecessor to a central role.
In his first statement after taking formal charge, Singh emphasized a renewed focus on citizen-centric policing, technology-driven investigations, and strengthening community trust. โPolicing today is as much about compassion and accountability as it is about enforcement. Assam Police will continue its evolution as a modern, people-first force,โ he said.
Well-regarded within the force for his expertise in counter-terrorism, public safety, and cybercrime, Singh has previously served in key roles across Assam and the Northeast, including stints in intelligence, traffic, and emergency services.
Sources within the police department indicated that Singhโs tenure will focus on bolstering coordination across law enforcement units, enhancing internal discipline, and tackling emerging security challenges, including cross-border smuggling and digital crime.
His formal appointment as DGP and HoPF also grants him the topmost operational command over Assamโs civil and armed police wings โ a responsibility that places him at the heart of the stateโs security and public order machinery.
The government and senior bureaucrats welcomed his leadership, expressing confidence in his ability to steer Assam Police through its ongoing modernization and reform efforts.
Singhโs vision for a transparent and tech-empowered police force is expected to shape the direction of law enforcement in Assam in the years to come.
