A meeting of Sh. S Krishnan, Secretary MeitY and Sh. Amandeep Gill, Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology was held to discuss the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology and India’s growing role in shaping the global digital discourse.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Shombi Sharp, UN Resident Coordinator, and members of the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies, Quintin Chou-Lambert and Ms Antonieta Loaiza. From Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, senior officers including Sh. Bhuvnesh Kumar, Additional Secretary, Sh Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary, Sh Sushil Pal, Joint Secretary, Sh Sanket Bhondve, Joint Secretary and other senior officers from MeitY and NIC.
Mr Gill outlined the key initiatives of his office, emphasizing the importance of global cooperation in technology governance and innovation. The meeting emphasized the critical importance of multilateralism in today’s interconnected world, where global challenges—such as digital transformation, AI governance, and cybersecurity—require collective action and cooperation across borders.
The discussion included learnings from the outcomes and impact of the High-Level Advisory Body on AI’s report which provide valuable insights into the governance of the evolving AI landscape, and the Global Digital Compact as a vital framework for promoting international cooperation on digital issues.
The United Nations’ central role in shaping global AI governance was highlighted, advocating for ethical, inclusive, and sustainable approaches to the design, development, and deployment of AI technologies.
India’s growing influence in shaping the global digital discourse was highlighted, with a focus on the country’s increasing presence in key international forums and the success of its presidencies in G20 and the Global Partnership on AI.
The success of India’s domestic initiatives — such as the IndiaAI Mission, its Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), CERT-In, and the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act—was highlighted with a focus on enabling its global alignment and adoption.
The discussion also outlined the way forward for India in strengthening the representation of the Global South in the global dialogue on AI and digital technologies.
