In a significant step towards accelerating India’s transition to sustainable transportation, NITI Aayog today launched the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The index is a pioneering framework designed to benchmark and monitor the progress of Indian States and Union Territories in electric mobility adoption.
The report was officially released by Shri Rajiv Gauba, Member, NITI Aayog, in the esteemed presence of Shri B. V. R. Subrahmanyam, CEO, NITI Aayog, Shri Kamran Rizvi, Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Shri O. P. Agarwal, Distinguished Fellow, NITI Aayog, and Shri Sudhendu Sinha, Programme Director – E-Mobility, NITI Aayog, along with other senior dignitaries.
The India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) evaluates all States and UTs out of 100, based on 16 indicators grouped under three core pillars:
Transport Electrification Progress: Measuring demand-side EV adoption
Charging Infrastructure Readiness: Assessing the development of supporting infrastructure
EV Research and Innovation Status: Tracking supply-side efforts and R&D progress
This first-of-its-kind initiative underscores the importance of state-level leadership, integrated planning, and data-driven policymaking to propel India’s e-mobility mission forward.
NITI Aayog emphasized that the IEMI will serve as a vital tool for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and civil society to drive coordinated efforts towards a cleaner, greener transport ecosystem.
