New Delhi, June 13, 2025 — In a historic milestone for India’s military medical corps, Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin has taken charge as the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) — becoming the first woman officer ever to hold this prestigious tri-service position.
A highly decorated and respected officer, Surgeon Vice Admiral Sarin brings with her over three decades of distinguished service in military medicine, having served in various leadership roles across the Navy, Army, and Air Force medical establishments. Prior to this appointment, she served as the Director General Medical Services (Navy) and also held key positions within the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) and various command hospitals.
As DGAFMS, she will now head the integrated medical services of the Indian Armed Forces, overseeing the delivery of healthcare to nearly 14 lakh serving personnel, veterans, and their families, while also steering medical preparedness in peace and conflict scenarios.
Her appointment marks a transformative moment not only for the Armed Forces Medical Services but also for gender representation in military leadership, setting a powerful precedent for future generations of women in uniform.
