Taranjit Singh Sandhu appointed Delhi’s new Lieutenant Governor

President Droupadi Murmu has named Taranjit Singh Sandhu, former Indian Ambassador to the United States, as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, effective immediately. The appointment replaces Vinai Kumar Saxena, who has been reassigned as Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, amid a sweeping administrative reshuffle across nine states and union territories.
Sandhu, a 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, brings decades of diplomatic experience, particularly in US affairs, where he served multiple stints at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC. He was India’s Ambassador to the US from 2020 to 2024 and High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from 2017 to 2020. After retirement, he joined the BJP and contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar.
Educated at St Stephen’s College, Delhi University (BA History Honours) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (MA International Relations), Sandhu’s career includes roles as Consul General in Frankfurt, Joint Secretary (UN) in the Ministry of External Affairs, and key positions at India’s UN mission. His extensive engagement with the US Congress, diplomatic corps, and international investors positions him uniquely for Delhi’s complex administrative landscape.
The move signals a strategic shift toward experienced diplomatic leadership for the national capital, where the LG navigates overlapping jurisdictions with the elected government, urban development challenges, and high‑profile international engagements. Sandhu assumes charge at a pivotal time as Delhi gears up for governance reforms and infrastructure priorities.
