The Union Government has increased the allocation for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to Rs. 1,06,530.42 crore in the Union Budget 2026-27, marking a 10% rise over the previous year and a 194% increase over the last 12 years. The Department of Health Research has also received Rs. 4,821.21 crore, reflecting a sustained push toward universal healthcare, medical education, and innovation-driven health systems.
Key central sector schemes have received enhanced allocations. PM-JAY has been raised to Rs. 9,500 crore, NHM to Rs. 39,390 crore, PMSSY to Rs. 11,307 crore, and PM-ABHIM to Rs. 4,770 crore, reflecting the government’s focus on health coverage, public health capacity, and infrastructure creation. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission has also been increased to Rs. 350 crore, while support for human resources in health and medical education has been expanded to Rs. 1,725 crore.
The budget also gives a notable boost to National AIDS and STD control, blood transfusion services, and AIIMS, New Delhi, under non-scheme components, strengthening specialized healthcare delivery and tertiary care access. According to the PIB release, the strategic initiatives aim to improve education, clinical training, and research capacity for both domestic healthcare delivery and the broader goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.
