In a significant move aimed at bolstering India’s tourism sector, the Government of India has appointed Suman Billa, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1996 batch from the Kerala cadre, as the new Director General of Tourism.
Billa brings with him a wealth of experience in tourism policy and administration. He previously served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and also held a key leadership role at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Madrid, where he worked as Director of Technical Cooperation and Silk Road Development.
Known for his strategic insights and innovative approach, Billa is expected to spearhead initiatives to boost inbound tourism, strengthen domestic travel infrastructure, and promote sustainable and experiential tourism models across the country.
Tourism industry stakeholders have welcomed the appointment, expressing optimism that Billa’s international exposure and deep understanding of the sector will help revitalize the industry in the post-pandemic era.
As Director General, he will be responsible for driving national tourism campaigns, coordinating with states and UTs, and forging global partnerships to enhance India’s position as a top travel destination.
